Its board of directors consist of members who have no less than 15 years of experience and training in Shotokan Karate; some with more than 30 years of experience. Many of the directors have trained under some of the great pioneer Shotokan Karate Masters from Japan. These senior instructors, who have ventured out on their own, have banded together to create an organization to address the needs of independent Shotokan Karate instructors and their students.

Many independent instructors recognized the need for a reputable organization in order to achieve higher rank. At SKI, rank advancement is awarded at the recommendation of an examination committee whose three members are highly qualified and experienced Shotokan instructors with an aggregate of not less than forty years of experience. All dan ranks awarded will be certified by SKI and its black belt members.

SKI awards higher rank to qualified Shotokan karateka based upon known, objective criteria. The examination requirements are published here.

In order to ensure equity among applicants all over the world, the examination fees are based upon the per capita income of the applicant’s country. A listing of per capita income for countries is available at http://siakhenn.tripod.com/capita.html.
